Take part in a keen boat race and experience for yourself
how difficult it is to round the tip of Skagen. The boats are harboured in
an outdoor pool and remote-controlled from the edge.
The exhibition is designed around the themes of water,
sand, wind and light. In each of the theme rooms the visitor encounters a
very special atmosphere created by these four elements.
Skagen Odde Nature Centre was inspired by fascination for
Skagen's distinctive natural environment.
The meeting of the seas at Grenen. Råbjerg Mile. The unique quality of light
at Skagen. What actually takes place? And why here?
A visit to Skagen Odde Nature Centre provides the answers. The purpose of
the Centre is to enable visitors to see, hear and understand more about sand,
water, wind and light.
And perhaps open their eyes to natural phenomena they've never really thought
about before.
Opening May 19, 2000
An
extensive AV show tells the story of how man and nature have lived together
- for better and for worse - for thousands of years, and how Skagen Odde has
become what it is today. Lighting effects fill the walls of the room, which
can accommodate some 70 visitors.
Constructed
as a huge saltwater pool, with examples of Skagen's flora and fauna, this theme
room tells the story of the two seas which meet at Grenen. The experience is
underlined by the sounds of lapping waves and flickering light reflections on
the ceiling.
We
offer a variety of carefully prepared light dishes designed to appeal to your
palate. We also serve coffee, tea and pastries. From the first floor of the
café you can enjoy the splendid scenic view.
Here
you can roll up your sleeves and experiment with sand, wind and water. And in
here you're welcome to play with the light!
Put
nature under the microscope. Or ask the guide about anything between heaven
and earth. Question Corner is the venue for a host of activities during the
day, and explains why, for example, the waves have white tops.
Wind
forms landscapes. Being able to predict the strength of the wind has meant the
difference between life and death for Skagen's fishermen. Wind is an integral
part of Skagen's natural environment. But where does it come from, and where
is it when it doesn't blow?
The
light at Skagen is often said to have a very special quality. But is there any
truth in this, or is just imagination? Incorporated in this pavilion is a dark
room where you can see what light actually is. You can also experience the special
light phenomena which occur in nature. Why is the sky blue? And the sunset red?
The Light Room provides the answers.
Where
do migrating sand dunes migrate to? The Sand Room provides answers to many questions.
The room is designed as a sand dune which can also be seen in cross-section.
A 'Heath Robinson' device sorts the sand according to mineral content. You can
sort and 'paint' with the sand yourself using magnets.
Our
kiosk contains a selection of quality items, such as magnifying glasses, compasses,
binoculars and kites, which provide inspiration for a journey of discovery in
nature.
